Biodun Aremu, a renowned activist and the Secretary of the Joint Action Front, a coalition of Nigerian pro-labour civil society organisations, has died. Mr. Aremu was fatally injured after being struck by a hit-and-run driver in Ota, Ogun State, on Sunday evening.
The tragic incident occurred around 6:00 p.m. while the activist was crossing the road. The driver responsible fled the scene immediately following the collision. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital and efforts by medical personnel to resuscitate him with oxygen, the 65-year-old pro-labour campaigner was confirmed dead.
His demise was confirmed by Owei Lakemfa, the former Secretary-General of the Organisation of African Trade Union Unity and former Acting General Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress. Speaking on behalf of the Nigeria Labour Movement, Lakemfa announced that the veteran activist will be laid to rest on October 23, 2025.
Lakemfa paid a powerful tribute to Aremu, describing him as “one of the greatest revolutionaries and internationalists of our time.” He stated that Mr. Aremu had “joined the pantheon of revolutionaries on Sunday, October 12, 2025.”
While the burial was initially scheduled for October 13, Lakemfa disclosed that the Aremu family and the labour movement collectively decided to postpone the interment. “This is to allow for proper mobilisation and attendance,” he explained.
Consequently, the final funeral rites for Comrade Abiodun ‘Aremson’ Aremu have been rescheduled. He will be interred on Thursday, 23rd October 2025, at his family residence located at Number 30, Kabiru Fatoye Street, Opposite Alaka Field, Ijako Sugar Bus Stop, Ifo Road, Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway.
In a call to honour the activist’s legacy, Lakemfa added, “The greatest honour we can give our fearless teacher and leader is to continue in his footsteps and build a world founded on social justice.”
