In a recent development, the Federal Capital Territory High Court has postponed the trial of the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, over allegations of procurement fraud.
The adjournment was granted, pushing the continuation of the trial to January 18, 2024.*
Emefiele faces a six-count amended charge related to the alleged procurement of vehicles amounting to N1.2bn.
Despite pleading not guilty to the charges, he was remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre, and it wasn’t until November 22, 2023, that he was granted bail by Justice Hamza Muazu.
The bail, set at N300m, required two sureties with certificates of occupancy and titles of properties within the Maitama district in Abuja.
Regrettably, Emefiele has yet to fulfill the bail conditions, and recent reports indicate that he was brought to court and subsequently taken away by armed personnel of the Nigerian Correctional Service.
The trial has garnered significant attention, shedding light on the intricate legal proceedings surrounding the alleged financial misconduct by a prominent figure in the Nigerian banking sector.
