Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi is reportedly a transfer target for German Bundesliga club Werder Bremen. The 27-year-old forward has seen his playing time at Nottingham Forest reduced, with new signings including Igor Jesus and Arnaud Kalimuendo further limiting his opportunities.
Awoniyi has not featured in the current season, with Chris Wood and Jesus occupying the starting and backup striker roles, respectively.
Werder Bremen are considering a loan move to bring Awoniyi to Germany, aiming to strengthen their attacking options as the transfer window closes on September 1, 2025. His previous experience in the Bundesliga with Union Berlin, where he scored 15 goals in the 2021–22 season, makes him an attractive prospect for the club.
Awoniyi joined Nottingham Forest from Union Berlin in June 2022 for a club-record fee of £17 million. Since then, he has made 73 appearances and scored 17 goals. However, a serious abdominal injury in May 2025, which required emergency surgery and placed him in an induced coma, has further affected his position in the team.
With competition for places intensifying at Forest and limited first-team opportunities, a move to Werder Bremen could provide Awoniyi with the playing time necessary to regain form and maintain his contributions to the Nigerian national team. The impending closure of the transfer window adds urgency to the negotiations.
