Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has urged the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) to ensure transparency and accountability in the operations of the newly operational Port Harcourt Refinery.
After multiple delays, the refinery began fuel production on Tuesday, starting with a capacity of 60,000 barrels per day, producing Premium Motor Spirit, diesel, and other products. Truck loading of the products also commenced the same day, according to NNPCL spokesperson Olufemi Soneye.
In a post on his X account, Obi commended NNPCL for reviving the refinery, calling it a positive development with the potential to benefit Nigerians. However, he stressed the need for clear and accountable management of the nation’s oil resources.
Obi also expressed optimism about the forthcoming revival of the Kaduna refinery, noting its potential to enhance productivity, improve transportation, and ease economic challenges. He emphasized that increased refining capacity should translate into tangible benefits, such as reduced pump prices and long-term economic development for all Nigerians.
“Nigerians deserve clarity and accountability regarding the management of the nation’s vital oil resources, ensuring that the benefits of increased refining capacity reach every Nigerian,” Obi stated.
