Nigeria, ECOWAS Delegation Visits Sierra Leone Following Security Breach

Date:

In response to a security breach in Sierra Leone on Sunday, a high-powered delegation comprising officials from Nigeria and ECOWAS visited Freetown on Monday.

Sierra Leone’s President, Julius Bio, shared this information in a post, highlighting the significance of the delegation.

The delegation included Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; Chief of Defense Staff, Christopher Musa; Chief of Defence Military Intelligence, Emmanuel Udiandeye, and the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Touray. President Bio mentioned that the delegation conveyed messages of solidarity from ECOWAS Heads of State, with specific mentions of Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu, who also serves as the Chairman of the ECOWAS Committee of Heads of State.

During their visit, the delegation reiterated ECOWAS’ commitment to preserving democracy and good governance across the sub-region. They assured President Bio of their readiness to collaborate with his government to prevent future security occurrences.

President Bio affirmed his government’s unwavering commitment to democracy, justice, and the safety of citizens. He expressed gratitude for the support from the ECOWAS delegation during this challenging time.

The security breach in Sierra Leone led to a nationwide curfew after an attack on a military armoury, including the abduction of prisoners from a correctional facility. The government, however, assured citizens of its control over the situation and announced the arrest of individuals responsible for the attack, including some senior military officers.

Amid political uncertainty in West and Central African countries, marked by the resurgence of military coups, President Bio emphasized Sierra Leone’s dedication to preserving the peace achieved since the end of its decade-long civil war 21 years ago. The visit from the ECOWAS delegation underscores regional collaboration in addressing security challenges.
