With just three days to Ghana’s pivotal general elections, President Nana Akufo-Addo has reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring peaceful and credible polls.
Speaking to the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission in Accra on December 3, Akufo-Addo emphasized his intent to uphold Ghana’s democratic tradition, stating, “I came to office through a peaceful and credible election, and I want to leave the same way.”
Addressing concerns about regional challenges such as violent extremism and political instability, the outgoing president stressed the importance of Ghana setting an example through free and fair elections. The December 7 elections will mark Ghana’s ninth consecutive peaceful polls under its Fourth Republic, a legacy Akufo-Addo vowed to preserve as he completes his two-term tenure on January 7, 2025.
Leading the ECOWAS delegation, former Nigerian Vice President Mohammed Namadi Sambo praised Ghana’s enduring democratic traditions and called on all stakeholders to ensure transparency and professionalism during the electoral process.
The ECOWAS team also held discussions with Ghana’s Electoral Commission Chairperson, Jean Mensa, who confirmed that preparations were on track for a peaceful and credible election.
The delegation, which includes high-ranking officials such as Baboucarr Blaise Jagne and Ambassador Abdel-Fatau Musah, pledged ECOWAS’s continued support to Ghana’s democratic efforts.
This election is seen as a crucial test of stability in a region grappling with security challenges and political uncertainty.
