The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the stability of the Nigerian financial system.
In a statement issued by Acting Spokesperson Hakama Sidi-Ali on Tuesday, the CBN emphasized its efforts to protect public funds and maintain confidence in banking operations.
Sidi-Ali outlined several key measures the apex bank has implemented, including regular stress testing, risk-based supervision, and early warning systems designed to detect and address potential vulnerabilities in the financial sector. She explained that these tools allow the CBN to proactively manage risks and ensure the resilience of financial institutions.
“The CBN conducts regular stress tests to identify potential risks, ensuring that our financial institutions remain robust. Additionally, early warning systems are in place to detect emerging threats, allowing us to take timely action,” she said.
The bank’s approach to risk-based supervision, Sidi-Ali added, focuses regulatory attention on institutions posing the highest risk to the system. This targeted strategy ensures effective oversight while promoting the overall health of the banking sector.
The CBN has also strengthened international cooperation by establishing memoranda of understanding with regulators in countries where Nigerian banks operate, ensuring that banking practices align with both domestic and global standards.
Sidi-Ali concluded by affirming the CBN’s dedication to fostering a secure banking environment that instills confidence in depositors, ensuring their funds remain safe. The CBN will continue to adapt its strategies to protect the financial interests of Nigerians and the broader economy.
