University of Calabar Implements Significant Tuition Fee Increase for Undergraduates

Date:

In a recent statement released to the media in Calabar, the University of Calabar (UNICAL) management has announced a notable upward adjustment in tuition fees for undergraduate students, marking an increase of over 100 per cent.

The decision was reached during an emergency meeting of the university’s Senate held on Friday.

The revised fee structure, slated to take effect in the 2022–2023 and 2023–2024 academic sessions, reveals that students pursuing non-science courses will now be required to pay N111,000, N91,500, and N114,000 for freshmen, returning students, and final-year students, respectively. Additionally, third-party dues of N36,500, N21,500, and N21,500 will also be levied.

For students in science courses, the new fees stand at N155,000, N125,000, and N148,000 for freshmen, returning students, and final-year students. Third-party dues for this category amount to N38,500, N21,500, and N21,500.

Prior to this adjustment, tuition fees ranged from N64,050 for freshmen, N52,050 for final-year students, to N49,500 for returning students, depending on the department.

The university management cited the current economic realities as well as the imperative to uphold the institution’s academic standards as the driving forces behind the fee increment. This move is expected to enable UNICAL to navigate the challenges posed by prevailing economic conditions while ensuring the maintenance of its educational quality.
