Suspected Meningitis Outbreak Claims Lives of Students in Yobe State

Tragedy has struck several boarding public schools in Yobe State, with reports indicating a suspected outbreak of meningitis that has claimed the lives of at least 20 students.

The affected schools include Government Science Technical College, Government Girls Science Technical College, and Federal Government Girls College, all located in Potiskum LG, as confirmed by a reliable source within the town.

According to the source, most of the deceased students were admitted to the Specialist Hospital in Potiskum, where they received medical attention. Fortunately, some affected students are reportedly responding positively to treatment.

Confirming the outbreak, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Dr. Muhammad Sani Idris, revealed that Governor Mai Mala Buni has taken decisive action by directing the temporary relocation of the state Ministry of Education to Potiskum in response to the crisis. Dr. Idris also confirmed the admission of several students to Potiskum Specialist Hospital.

Expressing determination to combat the outbreak, Dr. Idris outlined proactive measures implemented by the government, including the deployment of ambulances to affected schools, continuous health monitoring of students, and the establishment of temporary isolation centers within schools.

While acknowledging the tragic loss of 17 students from Yobe state government-owned schools and one student from Federal Government Girls College, Dr. Idris highlighted ongoing efforts to investigate the outbreak’s cause and provide necessary medical support.

In conclusion, Dr. Idris reiterated the government’s commitment to safeguarding the well-being of all students and expressed hope for an improvement in the situation as concerted efforts continue.
