Nigerian Secondary Schools Shine in 2024 World Mathematics Tournament

In a remarkable achievement, two Nigerian missionary schools have garnered top honors in the 2024 World Mathematics Tournament (WMT), showcasing their excellence on the global stage.

Welkin International Schools, located in Atan-Ota, Ogun State, secured the coveted first position, while Baptist Mission School (BMS) in Benin City, Edo State, proudly clinched the overall second-best position.

The prestigious competition, organized virtually by the Mathematics for Life Foundation, attracted participation from 590 secondary schools across 33 countries, highlighting its global reach and significance.

This year marks the fourth edition of the tournament, which underscores the growing importance of mathematics education on a global scale.

Mr. Kevin Okunzuwa, Vice Chairman of the Parents/Teachers Association (PTA) of Benin Mission School, expressed pride and excitement as he announced the remarkable feat to journalists in Benin.

He commended the exceptional SS3 students, Victor Obaseki Christian and Daniel Noel Isuekevbo, for their outstanding performance, noting that their achievement brings honor not only to their families but also to the school as a whole.

Okunzuwa emphasized the need for increased investment in the education sector, particularly in enhancing the capacity of teachers and creating conducive learning environments for students to thrive.

He urged other students at BMS to emulate the exemplary dedication and achievement of Daniel and Christian, underscoring the importance of hard work and commitment in pursuing academic excellence.

The success of Welkin International Schools and Baptist Mission School in the 2024 World Mathematics Tournament serves as a testament to the exceptional talent and dedication within Nigeria’s educational institutions, further solidifying the country’s position as a leader in academic excellence on the global stage.
