The pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, has raised concern over the escalating wave of kidnappings in southwestern Nigeria, particularly in Kwara, Ogun, Ondo, Lagos, and along the Benin–Lagos Expressway.
In a statement issued on August 29, 2025, the group condemned the recent abductions and called for immediate action from security agencies and government authorities, emphasizing the need to protect citizens and restore safety in the region.
In Kwara State, over 200 bandits reportedly attacked Babanla town and surrounding areas in Ifelodun Local Government Area, abducting several residents and forcing many to flee their homes. The traditional ruler of Babanla lamented that such attacks have persisted for about two months, with no significant intervention from security agencies despite repeated appeals. Afenifere described these developments as deeply concerning, noting that “an injury to one is an injury to all.”
In Ondo State, the abduction of Pastor Ayodeji Akesinro from his home in Upenme, Owo Local Government Area, on August 28, 2025, has further heightened fears. The National Union of Allied Health Professionals condemned the act, highlighting the vulnerability of healthcare workers who play a critical role in community well-being.
Afenifere also referenced other recent incidents, including the kidnapping of a seven-year-old boy in Alapere, Lagos, who was later rescued; the abduction of seven farmers in Akure North, Ondo State; and the kidnapping of three individuals in Ajebo, Ogun State. The group expressed concern over the frequency and spread of such incidents across the southwestern region.
The organization attributed the persistence of banditry to the complicity of some security officials, political and community leaders, and saboteurs within affected communities. It called on perpetrators to cease their actions, warning that these acts endanger innocent lives and properties.
Afenifere further urged authorities, security agencies, and community leaders to address the crisis, combat insecurity, and ensure that banditry is eliminated. The group emphasized that safety and security are essential for the well-being of the people, fostering peace, social cohesion, economic growth, and overall enhancement of general welfare.
