Morayo Afolabi-Brown, the former host of TVC’s long-running morning show Your View, has candidly shared her battle with depression and enduring suicidal thoughts in an interview with Chude Jideonwo.
The media personality revealed that during her twelve-year tenure on the show, she felt deeply trapped, a state which triggered severe despondency. “I was depressed. It got so bad that I thought I was suicidal. I just left everything behind. I remember just walking on the express, hoping a car would hit me. It was that bad,” she confessed.
Morayo said that by the tenth anniversary of Your View, she recognised that it was time to move on, although she initially lacked clarity about her next steps. “It was when we were 10 years old that I knew it was time to move on to the next thing. I’ve been harbouring that thought for a while, but I just didn’t know to what or where, you know. But I think last year, I got that light bulb moment,” she recalled.
She also opened up about her abrupt exit from TVC, disclosing that it was politically motivated. Morayo recounted how it was only after people questioned President Tinubu that he became aware that she was the daughter of the late Alao Aka-Bashorun. “People now called Asiwaju, ‘Do you know whose child was sacked?’ He said, ‘I’m not aware.’ He said, ‘This is the Alao Aka-Bashorun’s daughter. That’s when he knew it was me,” she revealed.
Addressing controversies she has faced, Morayo reflected on her earlier criticism of former Anambra Governor Peter Obi, attributing it to ignorance. “It was because I did not know him. After I made that comment, people called me and said, ‘Morayo, do you realise that when he was governor, he actually served us?’ So that was him. I said, ‘Oh, I did not know,’” she conceded.
She also discussed a heated moment stemming from a live-on-air episode in which she was accused of referring to her spouse as a “young offender,” a remark that only subsided after an intervention by the First Lady, which facilitated her public apology.
Morayo’s decision to leave Your View marked the end of a significant chapter in her career—one defined by both profound emotional struggles and notable professional upheaval.
