Jose Peseiro, the head coach of the Super Eagles, has provided insight into his decision not to alter his team’s tactics during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final against Ivory Coast.
Despite William Troost-Ekong’s opening goal with a header in the first half, the hosts rallied after halftime, scoring two goals to claim the trophy.
In the aftermath of the match, Peseiro was questioned about why the team opted to sit back and absorb pressure after taking the lead.
He responded: “When you have a system that you have been using and it has been working, you really don’t want to change it.
“It is true that I kept to this strategy until we were 2-1 down and then I decided to change it.
“We conceded goals from some defensive errors and they had a drop in level, against the Ivorians.”
