Ghana Coach Chris Hughton Sacked After Early Exit from AFCON 2023

Date:

The head coach of the Ghana national football team, Chris Hughton, has been dismissed from his position following the team’s premature elimination in the group stage of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast.

The decision to part ways with the English manager comes after Ghana’s inability to advance to the next round due to a lackluster performance in the group stage.

Ghana faced setbacks with a defeat to Cape Verde in their opening match, followed by a 2-2 draw with Egypt and another 2-2 draw against Mozambique. With only two points from the group stage, Ghana’s hopes of progressing were dashed, especially after Cameroon secured a 3-2 victory over Gambia, preventing Ghana from earning one of the best losers’ spots.

Chris Hughton, appointed as the head coach in February 2023 ahead of the World Cup in Qatar, had also served as the Technical Advisor from February 2022. The Ghana Football Association confirmed the coach’s dismissal and announced the dissolution of the entire technical team.

In a statement, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) said, “Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties with immediate effect. The executive council has also taken a decision to dissolve the technical team of the Black Stars. The GFA will in the coming days provide a roadmap on the future direction of the Black Stars.”

Hughton’s tenure saw four wins, five draws, and four defeats in 13 games with the Ghana national team. This recent setback marks Ghana’s second consecutive failure to progress beyond the group stage in the AFCON tournament.
