Guinea’s football federation (Feguifoot) and former star Pascal Feindouno are appealing for calm after six people died in celebrations following Guinea’s 1-0 victory against The Gambia at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Widespread celebrations erupted in Guinea after the crucial win, with fans taking to the streets of the capital, Conakry, in cars and on motorcycles.
Feguifoot urged fans to celebrate in a measured fashion to avoid danger, emphasizing that football is meant to bring joy, not sorrow. The tragic incidents occurred as fans spilled onto the streets to commemorate Guinea’s second group-stage win in the tournament, moving them up to second place in Group C.
Guinea’s passionate football culture was evident in the celebratory scenes, but the call for caution comes after three people died in a road accident during the festivities. Pascal Feindouno, a former star player for Guinea, echoed the sentiment, urging fans to support the country but maintain calm to prevent harm.
With Guinea well-supported in the host nation of Ivory Coast, where the AFCON is taking place, fans had traveled long distances to witness the matches. The appeal for restraint aims to ensure the safety of supporters and avoid further tragic incidents.
Guinea will face Senegal in another West African derby on Tuesday, seeking to secure the top spot in the group. The tournament, which began on January 13, is set to conclude with the final in Abidjan on February 11.
