Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu, who also serves as the Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, delivered a significant address at the 64th ordinary session of the regional body.
In his speech, President Tinubu urged West African leaders to prioritize good governance and collective prosperity as essential tools to prevent authoritarian takeovers of power and unconstitutional changes of government in the region.
Highlighting good governance as a pivotal catalyst for securing popular support through socio-economic transformation and development, President Tinubu emphasized that delivering good governance is not only a fundamental commitment but also crucial for addressing citizens’ concerns and improving their quality of life.
He argued that by providing effective governance that addresses challenges such as poverty and inequality, the region can tackle some of the root causes of military interventions in civilian processes.
President Tinubu acknowledged the decisions taken by West African leaders to strengthen the region’s democratic achievements and uphold the right of the people to elect their leaders.
He also mentioned specific measures outlined against any member state opting for an unconstitutional change of government, emphasizing the importance of protecting fundamental liberties despite the challenges associated with imposing punitive sanctions.
In addressing countries under military rule, President Tinubu called for realistic and short transition plans that can lead to the restoration of democracy and good governance. He expressed a willingness to provide technical and material support to these nations to achieve these strategic goals.
Commending President George Weah of Liberia for conceding victory and congratulating his opponent after the last presidential election, President Tinubu urged leaders and participants at the summit to give a standing ovation to President Weah.
He also acknowledged former President Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria for displaying a similar commitment to democratic ideals in 2015.
Turning his attention to recent disturbances in Sierra Leone and Guinea Bissau, President Tinubu urged fellow leaders to stand strong and be highly committed in supporting democratically elected governments. He emphasized ECOWAS’ zero tolerance for unconstitutional government changes and declared solidarity with the re-elected president of Sierra Leone, expressing a determination to fight for democracy.
