Court Halts Faction’s Planned Election for National Youth Council

Date:

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory has issued an injunction preventing a faction of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) from proceeding with a planned election. Justice J. E. Obanor granted the order on October 6, one day before the disputed election was scheduled to take place.

The ruling came in response to a motion filed by the Incorporated Trustees of the NYCN and its incumbent President, Ambassador Sukubo Sara-Igbe Sukubo. The court specifically restrained the factional leaders—Ademola Gbenga, Okechukwu Nnamene, Abel Abaji, Alex Allen Akin, and Hassan Mamman—from conducting the election pending the determination of the substantive suit, identified as FCT/HC/CV/3803/2025.

To ensure compliance, Justice Obanor mandated the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Department of State Services (DSS) to enforce the court’s order. Both security agencies are also listed as defendants in the case.

According to a supporting affidavit from the plaintiffs, the current leadership of the NYCN, led by Ambassador Sukubo, was legitimately re-elected during the council’s National Elective Convention held in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, from September 20 to 22. The legal action was initiated after the defendants, allegedly dissatisfied with the existing leadership, formed a parallel group and announced their own election for October 7 in Abuja.
