The Nigerian Senate has called for the Federal Government to convene a stakeholders’ meeting to address the ongoing flooding issues affecting communities in Lagos and Ogun states.
This decision, made following a motion titled “Flood Disaster in Ikosi-Isheri, Agboyi-Ketu, and Several Other Communities in Lagos and Ogun,” was put forward by Sen. Adetokunbo Abiru during Tuesday’s plenary session.
Abiru drew attention to the devastating consequences of the recent flood disaster triggered by the release of water from the Oyan River dam, which resulted in the displacement of numerous residents and the closure of businesses, schools, and religious institutions.
The Senate conveyed its condolences to the flood victims and commended the efforts of the Lagos and Ogun State governments in managing the crisis. Additionally, the Senate has instructed relevant committees to allocate sufficient funding to agencies such as NIMET, the Hydrological Agency of Nigeria, and the River Basin Development Authorities to ensure the effective fulfillment of their mandates and prevent future disasters.
