President Bola Tinubu has directed the nation’s security chiefs to pursue sponsors of individuals flying Russian flags and advocating for coups.
This directive came after a briefing on the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests at the State House, Abuja, by Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa.
Gen. Musa addressed State House Correspondents, emphasizing that the military would not tolerate the display of foreign flags during protests, deeming it a treasonable offense. He stated, “Initially, when the protest started, they said it was peaceful, but we have realized that some individuals are taking advantage of it to cause mayhem, with incidents of looting and criminal activities.”
The situation escalated with the appearance of foreign flags within Nigeria’s borders, which Gen. Musa declared unacceptable. He relayed President Tinubu’s message: “We will not accept anybody flying any foreign flag in Nigeria. That is a treasonable offense and will be treated as such.”
Gen. Musa noted that children were being manipulated to carry these flags and assured that those responsible for these actions have been identified and will face serious consequences. He reiterated the President’s firm stance against any attempts to disrupt Nigeria’s peace and democracy.
All security agencies, according to Gen. Musa, are prepared to defend democracy and the nation’s sovereignty. “We will not accept any actions that push for a change of government. Democracy is what we stand for and will continue to defend,” he stated.
Addressing allegations that soldiers participated in looting during the protests, Gen. Musa clarified that thorough investigations revealed no involvement of armed forces members in such activities. He emphasized that soldiers were deployed to restore order and not to engage in criminal behavior.
The briefing also saw the attendance of Vice President Kashim Shettima, Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila, National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, and heads of various security agencies including the Chief of Army Staff, Chief of Naval Staff, Chief of Air Staff, Inspector General of Police, and Directors-General of the DSS and NIA.
President Tinubu had previously addressed the nation, urging protest organizers to suspend their actions due to escalating violence and loss of lives. He warned against any attempts by opposition elements to destabilize the country’s democracy.
The government remains resolute in maintaining peace and order, with clear instructions to security forces to uphold the constitution and protect Nigeria’s democratic integrity.
