Police in Lagos Warn Against Gatherings at Lekki Tollgate Ahead of #EndSARS Anniversary Peace Walk

Date:

The police in Lagos have issued a warning against any form of gathering at the Lekki tollgate in the state, indicating that such gatherings will not be tolerated.

This announcement came on Thursday evening, coinciding with the declaration by Falz and Mr Macaroni that they would stage a peace walk on Friday to commemorate the third anniversary of the #EndSARS protest.

The peace walk is intended to honor the Nigerians who lost their lives during the #EndSARS protest, which sought to end police brutality and extrajudicial killings in Nigeria. The protest culminated on the night of October 20, 2020, leading to the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), a police unit accused of human rights abuses.

Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson for the state police command, conveyed this warning via a statement. He made it clear that no gatherings or convergence of any kind would be permitted in the vicinity of the tollgate.

The statement read, “Buses at/by Oriental Hotel suggests stopping/waiting of buses and gathering of passengers. For the avoidance of doubt, no gathering/convergence whatsoever would be allowed anywhere around the toll gate.”

Hundeyin also assured that the police would be fully present to ensure security for all individuals participating in the peaceful walk, as long as their activities do not obstruct traffic. This development reflects the police’s proactive stance in managing public gatherings and maintaining order in the area.
