The Nigerian Navy Ship Delta has reported a significant decrease in crude oil theft and other maritime crimes in the Niger Delta region. Commodore Chindo Yahaya, the outgoing Commander of the NNS Delta, made this announcement during a farewell parade held in his honor at the Warri Naval Base.
Yahaya noted that during his tenure, which began on May 2, 2023, the NNS Delta achieved notable successes in combating maritime crimes. These successes included the destruction of illegal refining sites and the apprehension of sea pirates and robbers. He highlighted the Base’s efforts in apprehending suspects involved in crude oil theft and improper documentation, as well as the seizure of vessels engaged in illegal activities.
The Commander attributed the reduction in maritime crimes to the collective efforts and commitment of the Navy personnel. He cited successful operations in destroying illegal refining sites and recovering stolen crude oil and other illegal products. Yahaya commended the dedication of all officers and ratings of the Base and urged them to maintain the same level of commitment under the incoming leadership.
Yahaya also acknowledged the support of the Delta State government and various military and para-military agencies, as well as the inter-agency cooperation that contributed to maintaining peace in the region. He emphasized the importance of discipline, perseverance, and adherence to regulations among Navy personnel.
Commodore Muhsin Abba, the incoming Commander of NNS Delta, reassured journalists that the Navy would continue to fulfill its mandate of securing the maritime environment. He emphasized the importance of discipline and loyalty among personnel and reiterated the Navy’s commitment to safeguarding the country’s economic activities, particularly in the oil-rich Niger Delta region.
