The Nigeria Customs Service has decided to suspend the sale of confiscated food items to Nigerian citizens following a tragic stampede that resulted in loss of lives at the Nigeria Customs Service Old Zonal Headquarters in Yaba, Lagos State, on Friday.
Abdullahi Maiwada, a spokesperson for Customs, conveyed this decision in a statement released on Monday. The statement highlighted that the Customs had initially planned to dispose of seized food items on February 20, 2024, as a measure to alleviate the country’s hardships.
“Considering the recent unfortunate event, we regrettably announce the suspension of this exercise until we establish what transpired on Friday, 23 February 2024,” the statement read.
The statement further expressed the Customs’ intention to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and formulate more comprehensive actions in line with their noble intentions.
