NGO Founder Advocates for Laws to Protect Elderly, Cites Neglect in Society

Date:

Chief Esan Ogunleye, founder of the non-governmental organisation Aged Heart Care Foundation (AHF), has called for the enactment of laws that prioritize the well-being of elderly individuals in society.

The founder, also known as the Atayese of Mobaland, urged all three tiers of government to establish relevant legislation addressing the welfare of the elderly, taking inspiration from developed countries.

Expressing concern over the poor living standards of elderly individuals, Ogunleye established the Aged Heart Care Foundation in 2008 in Ilupeju-Ekiti, Ifeloju Local Council Development Area. The foundation has already benefited 186 elderly persons in the area.

Ogunleye highlighted the neglect faced by elderly individuals in society, particularly when their children and relatives migrate for better opportunities. He emphasized that ageing is a natural process and should not be treated as a disease.

Speaking on the foundation’s efforts, Ogunleye stated, “We have 45 members presently that we are catering for; we pay them monthly stipends, though it may not be enough for their upkeep but it is a relieve to their families. Any of them whose condition needs medical attention, we take them to the hospital for treatment, and we foot their bills and conduct regular check-ups on them.”

The call for legislation to protect the elderly reflects a growing awareness of the need for comprehensive support systems for aging populations.
