Lagos State, CIG Motors Launch Vehicle Assembly Plant to Boost Local Auto Production

Date:

Lagos State Government has officially commissioned a vehicle assembly plant in collaboration with Chinese automobile company CIG Motors.

This facility, located along WEMPCO Road in Ogba, Lagos, is set to produce various classes of brand new cars and will be jointly run by the state government and its partner.

The plant is the result of a joint venture agreement signed between Lagos State and CIG Motors, a Chinese automaker. It has the capacity to assemble 5,000 new vehicles annually in the first phase, contributing to the creation of thousands of direct and indirect jobs.

The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, hailed the milestone as a promising synergy between international partnerships and local talent. He emphasized that it underscores Lagos’ commitment to investments that promote job creation, skill development, wealth generation, and entrepreneurial opportunities.

The plant is designed for the assembly of Completely Knocked Down (CKD) vehicles. By manufacturing locally, it is expected to reduce the cost of brand new GAC vehicles in the local market and decrease dependence on imported second-hand vehicles.

The Chairman of CIG Motors, Chief Diana Chen, highlighted that the assembly plant’s full operation will increase the annual production capacity from 5,000 to 50,000 units. The plant is equipped with three automated lines for the assembly of GAC vehicles, including the Trim Line, Chassis Line, and Final Line.

This initiative not only promotes the automotive sector in Lagos but also provides more opportunities for employment and economic growth in the region.
