The House of Representatives has passed a resolution urging all levels of government to ban a popular children’s book, “Queen Premier,” due to its content.
Lawmakers argue that the book contains words like “gay” and “eros,” which they believe introduce “gay and lesbian” concepts to children.
The motion to ban the book was presented by Sulaiman Gumi and received support from other members of the House. Gumi emphasized the increasing presence of foreign educational materials in nursery and primary schools in Nigeria, expressing concern that these materials promote values and ideas that contradict the country’s cultural norms and values.
Bello el-Rufai, who also supported the motion, shared his experience of having to withdraw his children from a prominent school in Abuja because of the content in similar books. He emphasized that his religious background helped him remain “upright” despite living in the United States for years.
As a result, the House of Representatives passed a resolution to ban “Queen Premier” and similar books promoting a culture they deem incompatible with Nigerian norms and values. The use of such books has been declared a criminal offense.
