Daniel Aturu, a former inmate of the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Owerri, Imo State, who recently completed a 12-year sentence, reflects on his transformative journey behind bars, expressing gratitude for the life-changing experience.
Convicted of conspiracy and possession of stolen property in 2012, Aturu initially battled depression but eventually found purpose and self-discovery during his incarceration. He credits the support and encouragement he received within the custodial centre for enabling him to excel in laundry services, a skill he now plans to utilize in giving back to society.
Upon his release, Aturu was bid farewell by custodial centre officials who presented him with a washing machine, a gesture facilitated by a philanthropist. This support aims to assist him in continuing his laundry business at home, providing a means of livelihood as he transitions back into society.
Goodluck Uboegbulam, the command Public Relations Officer, highlights Aturu’s significant impact within the prison community over the past 12 years, emphasizing his dedication to providing laundry and dry-cleaning services to inmates and personnel alike.
Aturu’s journey towards rehabilitation and reformation involved participation in religious activities and vocational training programs offered by the custodial centre. Under tutelage from vocational instructors, he honed his skills in fabric handling, demonstrating a commitment to self-empowerment and functional integration.
Deputy Controller of Corrections (DCC), Eke Eke, while releasing Aturu, urges him to maintain focus and uphold good conduct. The Aftercare unit of the custodial facility will monitor his progress, ensuring a seamless transition back to his community.
Eke emphasizes the importance of societal support in the rehabilitation and reintegration of offenders, urging against stigmatization and advocating for a more inclusive approach to offender reformation.
