A devastating fire broke out on Tuesday at the timber market located in Nnewi North Local Government Area (LGA) of Anambra State, causing significant damage to the area. The incident was reported to have started around 11:30 a.m.
Mr. Martin Agbili, the Director of Anambra Fire Service, confirmed the incident in a statement, stating that upon receiving a distress call regarding the fire outbreak, they promptly dispatched fire trucks and firefighters to the scene to combat the blaze.
While the exact cause of the fire remains unknown, initial assessments suggest that it originated from a heap of sawdust in the market, which generated smoke that quickly engulfed the area. Fortunately, there were no reported casualties resulting from the incident.
Agbili further noted that the timely intervention of the firefighting team prevented further escalation of the fire, ultimately saving the timber market from complete destruction. The intense firefighting efforts continued until approximately 5:40 p.m., ensuring that the blaze was fully extinguished.
Efforts are likely underway to assess the extent of the damage caused by the fire and to implement measures for the market’s recovery and restoration.
