Nollywood’s ‘Osamede’ Revives Benin Mythology with Cinematic Flair

Date:

Nollywood is venturing into uncharted territory with Osamede, a film that brings the rich mythology of the Benin Kingdom to the forefront of African cinema. Produced by Gold Lilies Productions and directed by James Omokwe, the film marks a significant departure from the industry’s traditional focus on Yoruba narratives.

Set against the backdrop of the 1897 British invasion, Osamede follows the journey of a young orphaned girl who discovers she has superhuman abilities linked to the sacred Aruosa stone. This revelation propels her into a mission to liberate her people from colonial oppression, blending elements of fantasy with historical events.

The film stars Ivie Okujaye Egboh in the titular role, supported by Lexan Aisosa Peters, William Benson, Tosin Adeyemi, Lancelot Oduwa Imasuen, and Alexander Bud. Egboh, who spent her formative years in Benin City, describes the project as a personal and cultural milestone. She recalls her childhood fantasies of being a superhero saving Benin, which now resonate through her portrayal of Osamede.

Osamede debuted at the 2025 Cannes Film Market, showcasing African mythology through a lens of epic fantasy. Executive producer Lilian Olubi emphasized the film’s role in revolutionizing the presentation of African historical narratives, aiming to bring the legendary Benin Empire’s mythology to life with production values and storytelling that mirror Hollywood fantasy epics.

With its blend of historical context, mythology, and cinematic spectacle, Osamede is poised to set a new standard for African filmmaking, offering global audiences a glimpse into the untapped cinematic richness of Benin Kingdom lore.
