A Nigerian national has been charged with sextortion by police in northwestern Ontario, following an investigation initiated in December 2022.
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) provided limited details about the case, noting that it pertained to a “youth-related sextortion scam.” The OPP collaborated with the Elgin County OPP, OPP regional intelligence unit, and Canada Border Services Agency to identify the initial beneficiary of the scam, as disclosed in a news release on Thursday.
The 21-year-old suspect was apprehended by the OPP in Ottawa based on a warrant issued by Atikokan OPP.
The accused is facing one count of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000 and has been released by the police. Their scheduled court appearance is set for November 30 at the Atikokan Ontario Court of Justice.
The OPP encouraged victims of similar scams to report their experiences to the police, emphasizing that identifying and charging individuals involved in such offenses is possible. They also offered support to help victims navigate through the challenges they may face.
