The Niger State Police Command has taken into custody Usman Yahaya Muhammad from Kinboku-Kudu Village, Mokwa Local Government, on charges of allegedly murdering a motorcycle rider in the region.
DSP Wasiu Abiodun, the state’s Public Relations Officer, confirmed the arrest during a suspect parade in Minna. He stated that Muhammad was apprehended for culpable homicide.
Abiodun detailed that after committing the crime, the suspect abandoned the victim’s body and fled the scene, taking the motorcycle with him.
In an interview, Muhammad admitted to the crime and disclosed that he had boarded the victim’s motorcycle, intending to travel to Eppa village. However, he killed the motorcyclist before reaching their destination.
When asked about the motive behind the murder, Muhammad responded, “I cannot say why I killed him. Something made me do it. After I finished killing him, I went and reported myself to our vigilante leader in my area, who then reported the incident to the police, leading to my arrest.”
He confessed to using a machete to fatally injure the motorcycle rider on the neck twice, causing him to fall, after which he stole the motorcycle.
When questioned about whether he wished to face a similar fate to that of his victim, Muhammad replied, “No, I want to die the way I killed. I want to live.”
The suspect also revealed that he had committed similar crimes eight times in the past. Additionally, he mentioned that his wedding ceremony was scheduled for Friday.
The police command disclosed that they recently arrested a total of 38 suspects, with seven of them being charged in court for various offenses, including banditry, kidnapping, armed robbery, culpable homicide, among others, in the state.
